The Monroe City Missouri U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, at Mark Twain Lake, hosted their second annual C.A.S.T. for Kids event for children with disabilities living in and around the Monroe City area. As the morning began, boaters from the Missouri B.A.S.S. Federation gathered at the Indian Creek Marina boat ramp and were soon ready for another exciting day with kids. Most of the boaters had attended last year’s event and were busy sharing stories with each other as the kids began to arrive. The pairing began and soon after everyone was off for a day of fun and fishing.
Mark Twain is one of the most beautiful lakes in the country with deer and wild turkey roaming the shorelines adding to the thrill of this already exciting program. “Hosting this event is one of the most meaningful things we do here, stated Park Ranger Mary Anne Heitmeyer. Being with these children really makes you realize what an impact this program has on everyone involved. We are thrilled that everyone in our area supports our effort to provide this program to the kids. This really is a community effort.”
As the kids and boaters began to return to the park, smiles and laughter filled the area with stories of big catches and those that got away. A great lunch was provided and as with every C.A.S.T. event, Plaques were given to the kids for their accomplishments that day. ”I can’t wait to come back, stated Cassie, a young friend when asked if she had fun. I always get to ride in a pretty boat and catch lots of fish. I’m going keep coming back as long as they will let me.”
A special Thank You goes to Park Ranger Chris Coe who filled in for Mary Anne while on leave, to plan this year’s program. “It was a little difficult stated Chris but well worth the effort. I had a great time and look forward to next year”.
