“W.B.F.A. World Championship is Classic Event”
By: Art Pasley
Southern Director
The Woman’s Bass Fishing Association, or W.B.F.A., held its 2002 World Championship Tournament, November 11th thru the 16th, in Eufaula, Alabama. The ladies arrived to rainy windy conditions, and reports of severe weather headed their way. But the day prior to the official start of tournament, they met at the Lakepoint Resort boat ramp, to take 17 members of the Eufaula Boy’s and Girl’s Club fishing on beautiful Lake Eufaula.
“This is the third straight year we have been able to host a C.A.S.T. for Kids Event in conjunction with our season finale, stated Willie Cook, President of the W.B.F.A. We are very proud of our association with the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation. The woman really love being able to take these kids fishing and the plaques presentation is as much fun to me as the fishing is for the kids”, he continued.
If you’ve been asleep for the last 40 years or just don’t have any idea what tournament fishing is, the W.B.F.A. Classic World Championship, is for the best woman anglers in the world. They are legitimate Super Stars in fishing circles. With names like Penny Berryman, Judy Wong, Donna Newberry and Janice Cheek, it’s easy to see how the organization has grown to what it is today. These ladies have proven themselves to be highly motivated competitive anglers, and with new names and more interest in the sport, I would have to say, they are as much a part of professional fishing as beans are to rice.
As the official weigh-in came to a close, which was simply the kids and their partners having a chance to be seen and photographed with their days catch, everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch at the Lakepoint pavilion. I couldn’t begin to tell you how many hot dog’s I ate this past year, but they never seem to be all that bad when you’re hungry. Due to flight schedules I was forced to leave a little earlier than usual, but as I drove away, the ladies and kids were still swapping stories, laughing and showing off their new plaques and Willie and Carol Cook and the woman of the W.B.F.A., were doing what they do best, being Special People, Helping Special Children, Catch A Special Thrill.
