Story By: Art Pasley
Southern Director
C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation

A young man, being interviewed for a job with a bank in Fort Worth Texas was asked, are you a Texan? The young man having just moved to Fort Worth from Omaha Nebraska thought for a moment then stated, “I’m not from Texas but I got here as fast as I could”.
That was the case as the Sportsman’s Club of Fort Worth hosted their first C.A.S.T. for Kids Event on Saturday September 28, 2002. Volunteers came from as far away as Hemphill, Corsicana, and Yantis and even from Oklahoma to help as volunteers for a day, with children from Cooks Children’s Hospital. 15 children, all fighting a daily battle with cancer, left their worries behind and enjoyed a day of fun and fishing, at the Mistletoe Ranch south of Weatherford Texas.
“This is great”, stated Frank Wilson, Senior Vice President of Child Development with Cooks Hospital. “We really appreciate the hard work and effort made by everyone to provide this opportunity to our kids.”
“The Sportsman’s Club of Fort Worth is involved in several youth programs in Texas” stated club director Troy Montcrief, “but this is special. I can see this as an annual event with our club” he continued.
Bass Champs.com is a company that provides weigh-in equipment for clubs to conduct professional weigh-ins for club events and fundraisers. They provided their equipment and services at no charge to the club, allowing each child an opportunity to go on stage like the big kids, and weigh their day’s catch.
Chicken Express provided a great lunch for everyone, and as the day continued, children were running and playing on the well-manicured grounds of the Mistletoe Ranch.
As the event came to a close, several of the volunteers approached me with comments like, this is a great program, and make sure you call me next year. With what I saw that day with the members of the Sportsman’s Club and the many volunteers, I would say they are off to a great start. When the Sportsman’s Club of Fort Worth calls again, I may not be from Fort Worth, but I assure you, I will get there as fast as I can.
