Shawnee Mission Park Lake

Bryan T. Reese, Not Forgotten
By: Liz Birch

On July 31, 2004, Bryan and four friends were taking their annual fishing trip to Minnesota. An unfortunate accident involving a deer took Bryan's life and left his friends injured. This would be the last trip for Bryan and one that would change the lives of his family and friends forever.
Bryan loved life. He loved sports, art, NASCAR and fishing. He loved being with his friends and family and from the stories told at this years Bryan T. Reese, C.A.S.T. for Kids Camp Fish, he loved kids.
I sat with his dad for a time reminiscing about Bryan's life and dreams. One day while driving Bryan's dad asked him, "What would you do if you could do anything you wanted?" Bryan replied, "I would take kids fishing that otherwise would not have the chance. Give them a hobby they might love for life." The Reese family shared with me, "that is exactly what we are trying to do today, take kids fishing that otherwise may not have the chance."
Smiles beamed from the many kids that went fishing from the organization Higher Impact. Directed by Tyrone Flowers, Higher Impact is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that enhances the opportunities for high-risk urban youth. Shawnee Mission Park Lake was the site of what turned out to be a very fitting tribute to Bryan and his love of fishing. With 37 children on hand, many to experience for the first time what it feels like to catch a fish, along with 60 to 70 volunteers, the Reese family welcomed everyone to the first annual Camp Fish. Everyone was paired up, given rods, reels, bait and tackle boxes, and soon the catching began.
In addition to onshore fishing, there were many other activities shared with the children. Golf, beading, racing and a treasure hunt made for a wonderful day filled with fun and prizes. A tribute to Bryan took place as Happy Face Balloons were released into the bright clear skies of Kansas. What a special day this was and what a great way Bryan was remembered. After lunch and awards, the children said their goodbyes and thanked everyone for a fun day of fishing at Shawnee Mission Park.
This was a fine group of young men and woman and with the encouragement they received from the Reese family and friends, they should remember this day for many years to come. Being involved with changing the lives of children is a very rewarding experience for most people. It allows a person to influence a young life and set an example for them to follow. Bryan set an example with his life and, as everyone saw that day in Kansas, he left a lasting impression on many people.
Thanks to the Reese family for allowing us to celebrate the life of Bryan with 37 special children, family and friends. Another great group of Special People, Helping Special Children "Catch A Special Thrill".
