Merwin Hatchery

By: Crystal Vernor

My latest event took me to Ariel, WA at the Merwin Fish Hatchery. The first thing I did when I arrived was check out the fishing area, two holding ponds filled with rainbow trout. When I say filled, I mean filled, I could see a couple hundred fish in each pond. After seeing the ponds, I knew that fishing would be good today and that everyone would get their limit.
The volunteers started showing up early, and when the kids arrived, they were paired up with their fishing buddies and headed off to fish. As soon as the kids started fishing, the trout started biting and there was no looking back.
As I walked around the ponds, I could see that everyone was having a great time trying to see who could catch the biggest fish. Once the kids reached their fishing limits, they took their fish to be weighed and photo's where taken to commemorate the event. They even had volunteers who cleaned out the fish (I would like to give a special thanks to these guys for cleaning the fish; they did a wonderful job and cleaned a lot of fish).
Other activities where also available, kids could paint fish, try their hands at a casting contest to win prizes, or learn about hunting safety. A great BBQ was served with all the fixings. By the end of the day, the trout had defiantly thinned out in the ponds as many where caught, and every one had a great time.
Thanks again to everyone for making this a special day for the kids.
