Our ninth event proved to be most successful! This was the 6th year we've held the event at Strawberry Reservoir and fishing was better than ever -- almost every participant caught a fish, even though the fish were down 30 feet and deeper. Some of the kids actually came back early because they wanted to catch crayfish along the shoreline.
One of the participants, a 10-year-old boy, caught a 21", 5 lb rainbow and he was just elated! This same boy also won the taxidermy services drawing courtesy of Wildlife Memories. Boy, have they got their work cut out for them with this lunker!
One little girl, 9 years old, liked her fish so much she gave it a kiss when her picture was being taken. And yet another participant didn't want to relinquish his fish for cleaning - he wanted to carry it with him all day!
Weber Basin Job Corps served lunch to 185 hungry people as they have every year since the beginning. This year, though, we added shredded barbecue chicken to menu in addition to hamburgers and hot dogs. Robbie Robinson made the barbecue sauce (a secret family recipe) and it was a big hit! Jenny and Brian Billy made Indian fry bread and served it at the lunch with honey butter - another new item that was quickly gobbled up.
Volunteers raised $243 for future CAST for Kids efforts through a raffle and the Foundation sold clothing and other items to volunteers and participating families alike.
The weather threatened earlier in the day to put a damper on things, but cleared up nicely until we were cleaning up; then we had some rain. Thank heavens that all of the families and most of the volunteers were on their way home before the monster storm hit about an hour later. We must have a guardian angel.
My heart-felt thanks and respect go out to all of the volunteers. It is always deeply humbling and rewarding when I see people who are virtual strangers to one another get together to make this day a fun and memorable experience for these special kids. I couldn't ask for better people to work with!
