Lake Thunderbird

Another Great Day at Thunderbird

By: Art Pasley

As always, the Lake Thunderbird C.A.S.T. event was another huge success. Jeff Tompkins and the Reclamation staff, Susan Hendon and the Thunderbird State Park staff, Les Cummings and Chad Cox along with the Thunderbird Sailing Association members and Sharon Perry, local area manager for Albertson's joined forces again to conduct the annual event for disabled children from the Norman, Oklahoma area.
As the kids arrived they were greeted with smiles and equipment for a fun day on Lake Thunderbird. Once registered, they were introduced to their partners for the day and directed to the many boats lined along the shoreline.
As a result of very little rain in both Texas and Oklahoma, the lake level was down considerably, but not enough to slow the fishing as most of the kids managed to catch fish. "This is so much fun" stated one of the parents. "We really appreciate everyone for inviting us and our kids", she concluded. "Look at my fish" stated one of the participants as she posed for pictures.
Once everyone had returned, they made their way to the tent area for another great lunch provided by Albertson's. "We are so happy to be a part of the Lake Thunderbird C.A.S.T. event" stated Sharon Perry. "This is such a wonderful program and we are proud to be able to participate as an event sponsor", she concluded.
On hand as this years Master of Ceremony was none other than local personality, Kelly Clarke and what a wonderful job she did as she introduced each Boater Captain and Participant. Prior to awarding the participant plaques, long time event volunteer and host team member / "Special Thrill Maker" Susan Hendon was recognized for her continued support with the Oklahoma event. "Susan is a wonderful lady and a pleasure to have helping put this event together each year" stated Jeff Tompkins. I couldn't agree more!
As the day came to an end, most everyone reflected on the day with praise for each other and hopes of returning next year for another day of Special People, Helping Special Kids, "Catch A Special Thrill"
Thanks Jeff, Susan, Les, Sharon, Kelly, Julie and all the volunteers, boaters and kids for another Great Day at Thunderbird.
