Sarg Hubbard Pond

By: Crystal Vernor

Being a new employee of the C.A.S.T. For Kids Foundation, I have only been to one event this year, so I really didn't know what to expect for my event at Sarg Hubbard Pond in Yakima WA. When I arrived at the pond, things where already on the move, tables were being set up, rods were being rigged, and tackle boxes where being stuffed to get ready for our first arrival.
As the kids arrive, they are paired up with their fishing buddies, volunteers from the Job Corps, Carpenters Local 770, Culligan, and Bureau of Reclamations, and headed down to the pond. About 5 minutes after the first kids hit the pond, we heard through the radio that a fish had been caught, that motivated the volunteers and we knew the fishing would be good.
As I headed down to the pond, the kids and their fishing buddies were spread out, each team with their own technique on how to catch the elusive Rainbow Trout that lived in the pond. By the end of the day, almost all the kids had caught at least one fish and everyone had a tug on the line and could tell their story of the one that got away.
After the BBQ and the awards were handed out, it was time to clean up and head home. The kids, their parents and volunteers left with smiles on their faces. As I got into my car to drive home, I knew I had the best job in the world.
