Tenn-Tom CAST for Kids 2007
By: Ben Davis
Saturday May 5th, was just another beautiful day for most people. It was a perfect day for the 40 special needs children and 100 volunteers who traveled to Old Bridge Beach, on Bay Springs Lake, to participate in the 3rd Annual Tenn-Tom CAST for Kids Event. The weather could not have been any better for a day of fishing and fun on the lake. This was a shoreline event with several other games and activities planned. After a brief safety talk from one of the Park Rangers, the fishing equipment was handed out and the fun began! It didn't take long before someone screamed…"I got one! I got one!" A lot of nice catfish were caught in the 1 to 5lb range. A few kids went over to play some of the yard games that were set-up, but most of them didn't want to miss out on a chance to catch another fish.
At noon, everyone made their way up to the pavilion for hot dogs, sandwiches and pizza. After everyone finished eating, the door prizes and plaques were handed out. It looked like Christmas in May with all of the smiling kids tearing into the toy packages. Many of the kids didn't want to go home after the event was over…so they didn't. Many of them stayed around and fished well into the afternoon. The volunteers are already making plans for next year's event and the kids can't wait to come back and catch some big ole catfish.
