Thrill's and Chill's at Lake Perris
By: Andrea Estes
Program Assistant, C.A.S.T for Kids
Each year at Lake Perris in southern California, a unique event occurs that allows special children and those that care for them to come out and "Catch A Special Thrill". This year the sun was shining, the smiles were ear to ear, and the BBQ was hot! C.A.S.T. Event participants from Bill's Kids Organization and Oak Grove School were out in full fishing force. All 35+ kids and 70+ volunteers from the local area including, the Department of Water Resources, California Parks Department, local church groups and pro-fisherman, who took part created an extremely memorable experience for all!
Pontoon boats and fishing boats launched at approximately 8am for a 3.5 hour fishing experience in the shadow of the southern California mountains. Kids age 5 - 15 partnered with expert fisherman to learn the techniques to reel in the best catch! There were many successful catches, some of which were brought to shore for show, and others were released back into the lake. Gary Bradford and fishing protégé Sergio caught FOUR large bass, which aren't the easiest of fish to catch, that they were able to bring to shore and release in the holding tank for display. Sergio's sense of accomplishment was resonating like the sunshine off the lake's surface and Gary was definitely going to be a returning volunteer for years to come!
We would like to especially thank the Department of Water Resources and California Parks Department for overseeing and thorough organization of this event! Mark, Norm, and Andre, the local park rangers, became inspirational mentors for several youngsters and their caretakers!
This event was very memorable and instilled a sense of accomplishment in those that might not have access to these types of activities on a frequent basis. Through the culmination of the efforts of many wonderful children, volunteers, and several others joyful memories were created, stresses of daily rigor were forgotten, and several young people were given an opportunity to call this effort their own! This was my first event and the occasion was priceless!
Thanks to all and until next year, fish on!
